FINISHED PICTURE TAKING TODAY!!!!! :) I finished up with 2 special effect photos; a sideways camera and a mirror picture. I now have my total 10 learning, 10 artistic, 5 special effect and 3 favorite photos.  All thats left to do is put togeather the album (either online or in a book) which im hoping to get done tonight.  I also have to answer the question but i will have the rest of the week to do so.  I am one happy camper. :)

I've been taking more special effect photos for the past two days but not with the best of luck. Wednesday i didnt change out the developer thinking that it wouldnt make a difference but almost none of my pictures turned out probably for that reason. so today i mixed all new chemicals and took pictures of my camera in a mirror to see if it would have any effects.  I took two decent pictures which means that i still have 3 more to take. I can see the finish line.

Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend, i sure did!! Today i focused on taking speciall effect photos and sort of deciding what i want to do for them. To begin i decided to take one more photo to wrap up the artistic catagorie. And then for a special effect, i took a picture out of a window.  I got an excellent photo and it turned out to be one of my favorite ones! This was jing of mind boggeling for me because i wasnt really sure of where to put it in terms of sunlight in case the window would have effects of how the light passed through.  But i put it on the window ledge in a shodow but pointed twords a fairly sunny landscape and left the shutter open for about 35 seconds.  Turned out great! 4 mor photos to go!

Mon, 04 Jun 2012 07:57:07 -0700 19 & 20 Continued http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/19-20-continued http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/19-20-continued

First i measured how many watts of light i was getting in different areas.  I started by taking a picture of my Wesco cup in the following light levels:

#1 .26 for 30 seconds (next to the building, this was the darkest i could find)

#2 .87 for 30 seconds (it was about halfway between the building and open sunlight but still in shadow)

#3 1.07 for 30 seconds (direct sunlight)

Picture #1 was basically perfect. i got really great deffinition between dark and light. #2 was not as clear and it was a little fuzzy but it was still pretty visable. #3 was very dark and it was pretty clear that the film had been over exposed.  So the next day i decided to work on the exposure times for different light levels. For the in-between picture, i did 20 seconds and i was pleased with the results.  I decided to do about 12 seconds for the object in direct sunlight since there would be more sunlight and from previos observations it seems that with more sunlight, you will need a shorter exposure time.  These were my final results:

#1 .26 for 30 seconds

#2 .87 for 20 seconds

#3 1.07 for 12 seconds

The more sunlight you have in contact with the object you are taking a picture of, the shorter the exposure time should be.

Well, for the rest of this week i finished up picture taking.  I took 6 more artistic photos and 2 more that i took turned out to be my favorite.  It's about time to wrap things up so all thats left is the special effect photos and answering the question that i turned in.  The end is near. :)

The past two days i have been working on the expirament i chose from week two, which was to determine how the different levels of light effect the clarity of pictures.  I used a light sensor from Mr. Flak to gage how bright the light on the object was.  For each picture i used an old wesco cup that i found outside and i placed the light sensor pointing at the cup to determine how bringht the light was on the object i was photographing.  We were trying to decide wether to place it near the camera or the object, but i thought it made more sense to point it twords the cup.  This is because i have been keeping the camera in my shadow at all times so as to keep outside light away from the sensative film, so there wasnt ever a change in light levels on the camera.

Thu, 24 May 2012 06:56:00 -0700 Day 18 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-18 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-18

Today was a fairly cloudy day, not ideal for picture taking.  I set up a schedule for the rest of my project so that hopefully i can finish up by around next week wednesday.  I have about 8 artistic and special effect photos left to take as well as the light exposure experiment and i hope to finish up that by the end of this week.  Next week i will scan in all my photos and make my photo album on snapfish so that i will have enough time for it to arrive before the end of the tri.

So over the past couple days i have eralized that i am running a little bit behind schedule! I need to start choosing a variable to test with my camera and analyze what effects it has on the photos.  I am going to measure the amount of light entering the camera as i am taking the pictures and hopefully be able to determine how the light level affects the final outcome.  Today i got the CBL system from Mr. Falk which determines the light level and will hopefully be able to take the pictures this Monday.

Today i finished taking a few of my more artistic photos for the album. I tried taking a few pictures of people as well as a few in the front of school.  The best shot that i got today was of an old tea can.  You can easily read the words on the front of the can as well as the pictures.  Still getting some fairly posotive results!

These past couple days i have researched the question about my project that i had to have turned into Mr. Falk.  I think im gonna stick with my origional idea of looking at the interaction between chemcals and paper and light and paper. Today was a shortened day so i never got to take any more photos so hopefully i will be able to do some more as we enter the final stretch of the week.

It seems like forever since ive had the chance to write on here, its been a very busy week! On Tuesday i tried to focus on getting the correct shutter time so as not to uder/over expose my film. I started with 30-45 seconds and got some visable outlines but no real sharp images. So the next day i increased my exposure time, assuming that it was becausee the chemicals were not given enough time to react.  I continued to get the same blurry images with no real defined pictures.  I must admit, by this time i was becming a bit frustrated because it seemed that  everyone else was getting beautiful photos.  So on Thursday i had a chat with Mr. Falk and he suggested trying one very short exposure time and one very long exposure time to sort of get a better idea of which direction i should go.  Unfortunately neither of those images turned out and my frustration began to rise.  But Mr. Falk came to the rescue.  He had the idea of covering the camera in a towel wheile it was out of the dark room and, while we were outside, keeping the camera in our shadow so that a minimal abount of light would get to it.  IT WORKED!! we tried a dfew more this way and got some really great pictures. Finally i was making some progress.  So, today when my grandparents came (it was grandparents day at WMCHS) i had some good pictures to show and we were able to go outside and take some more pictures and i actually felt like i knew what i was doing. :) We were even able to get the grandparents involved in taking and developing the pictures.  Overall the week ended on a good note.

For week two we are also supposed to come up with a question to research or test relating to our projects.  For mine, i think i would like to research the chemicals used for developing the photos.  What are the chemicals on the film and how do they develop? And how do the developer and other chemicals work?  Im planning on turning this in to Mr. Falk on manday for him to approve and then we will do more research from there.

Mon, 07 May 2012 08:19:00 -0700 Day 8 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-8 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-8

Today was a pretty slow day...the weather was not very good for picture taking and it was pretty wet outside so i was worried about water damage to my camera since it is cardboard.  Instead, i decided to do a little work on the computers today.  I looked over the project discription on posterous to think of variables i could add to my project. i also started my photo album and made a snapfish account.  Hopefully the weather will clear up by tomorrow so i can do a little more picture taking outside.

Fri, 04 May 2012 08:28:00 -0700 Day 6&7 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-67 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-67

Pictures of my finished pinhole camera and chemicals:

Missed the post yesterday but made some great progress!  We had some troubles with timing and chemicals yesterday.  We started with 2 minutes of exposure time which turned out completely black.  So today we started with 15 seconds but that seemed to be too short and the chemicals in the paper didnt have enough time to react resulting in a grey, sort of blurry image.  The last one we tried today we upped the exposure time to 30 seconds and i actually started to see something! The trick is to pull the image out of the developer before you see the complete image.  I think that tomorrow i will try a slightly longer exposure time and try to remover the picture more quickly from the developer.

Finished the camera today! drilled, sanded and attached the pinhole. i aalso mixed all of my chemicals for developing the film. the ratios are as follows:

PQ Universal - Developer: 25ml chemical to 225ml water

ILFO Stop - F-Stop: 10ml chemical to 190ml water

Rapid Fixer - Fixer: 50ml chemical to 150ml water

WASHAID - Wash: 50ml chemical to 200ml water

Im very happy with the progress so far and ready to start taking the actual pictures!! (pictures will be uploaded tomorrow of the finished chemicals as well as the mixed chemicals. )

What a great day!! :) researched a little more on the use of my chemicals; still waiting on the fourth type.  But i did bring in an 18oz oatmeal container, cut the opening, and spraypainted the inside and lid black.  Planning on having to do a second coat tomorrow and hopefully i will have the supplies to get a start on the pinhole itself.

Fri, 27 Apr 2012 08:07:00 -0700 Day 2 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-2 http://vanessajoy.posterous.com/day-2

My plan for today was to get a start on my oatmeal container.  I was hoping to have the pinhole window cutout and the inside spraypainted.  But it turns out that i brought in the wrong size container...oops!  So, this weekend i will go and buy an 18oz oatmeal container instead of my current 42oz container. :) I did, however, spend some time today researching how to develop the photos and how to set up the dark room.  Aiming for a productive weekend/week ahead of me!!

Today i researched what type of camera i will be making and which supplies i will need to gather so that i can hopefully begin the 'construction' tomorrow. I found this site incredibly helpful and will probably follow most of their instructions for the making of my pinhole camera: http://users.rcn.com/stewoody/takecam.htm It looks like several of the materials i will be using are already available to me via Mr. Falk (my physics teacher), but i will need to bring in an oatmeal box and a #16 beading needle. I'm excited to begin this project and hope to develop some great photos.
